General speed limits & signs

Study the speed limits and always distinguish general limits from a speed limit displayed by a road sign. The existing FreeMode question bank uses 60 km/h for urban roads, 100 km/h for rural roads outside urban areas and 120 km/h for national highways.

Following distance

The current FreeMode study material uses a two-second gap as its normal-condition rule and recommends increasing the gap in wet conditions.

Overtaking

Before overtaking, check mirrors and blind spots and make sure the manoeuvre is permitted and safe. The current study notes cover overtaking on the left where the vehicle ahead is turning right and restrictions associated with solid lines, blind rises and sharp curves.

Traffic lights

Know the meaning of red, amber, green and flashing red signals. Your response should always account for whether it is safe to proceed.

Pedestrians & crossings

Slow down and give pedestrians the required consideration at crossings. The existing question bank tests stopping where a pedestrian is crossing or about to cross.

Intersections & right of way

Practise four-way stops, yield-controlled intersections and traffic circles. The question bank includes the principle that vehicles already in a traffic circle have right of way.

Cellphones & distractions

The question bank tests hands-free cellphone use. Treat distraction as a core study topic and avoid using a handheld phone while driving.

Reversing & parking

Before reversing, ensure the movement is safe and does not create a hazard. Study stopping and parking restrictions as separate rules rather than memorising distances without context.

Accidents & emergencies

The current material teaches stopping after a collision, checking for injuries, rendering reasonable assistance and contacting emergency services.

Weather & visibility

Revise low visibility conditions such as fog. The current question bank tests low-beam headlights and fog lights rather than high beam.
